Understand the Eco Evolution

The movement toward recycled, recyclable and sustainable products goes mainstream and our suppliers are responding by deepening their commitment to Eco production practices and expanding their offerings for products made with the environment in mind. There is a worldwide demand pushing the growth of these products in our industry. Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 and fun fact, the “Don’t Mess with Texas” catchphrase evolved from a 1985 anti-littering campaign.

In the fall, you may recall we rolled out our EcoSmart partnership that's aligned with 1% For the Planet. Products made from wheat straw are trending, but likely you are unfamiliar with the term. Wheat straw is the material comes from the stalk that is left after harvest. This raw material is gaining popularity because instead of waste it's being reclaimed to make into products such as reusable plastics for food containers, utensils and drink ware.

Why wheat straw plastics?

  • You are choosing a product that is made from rapidly renewable and reclaimed wheat straw instead of trees. Best of all, at the end of its life, you can send your container to the commercial composting facility or home composting efforts instead of the landfill.

  • By using wheat straw in our products, you are diverting material from the waste stream and using a reclaimed resource to make durable, lightweight, and rapid compostable packaging.

  • Products made from wheat straw are strong, microwave & freezer safe, can handle hot liquids up to 200 Fahrenheit, conform to US Food & Drug Administration guidelines, are non-allergenic and gluten-free
