Today is Arbor Day; do you know the roots of this story?
As the pioneers moved into Nebraska Territory, the absence of trees made it hard to find shade, heat & build their homes, and have the necessary windbreaks they needed to keep soil in place. Then in 1872, J. Sterling Morton took his advocacy for trees to another level, proposing a tree planting day known as Arbor Day. It's estimated that 1 million trees were planted that day, which might be a stretch, but it's a fact that by 1920, forty-five 45 states and territories were celebrating Arbor Day.
